UofA is currently in the process of migrating to Alma and participated in the early adopter program with the hope of launching our system with the NDE interface in July. However, the timeline for NDE doesn’t align with our project schedule with some key features released later this year, so we will proceed with launching Primo VE, with a potential upgrade to NDE next year. We did a quick demo with our Library Student Advisory Council, and the response to the NDE interface was very positive.

Now with extended timeline to launch NDE, we will have more opportunities for usability and accessibility testing. Our team has connected with the U of A’s Council for Systemic Ableism to involve them and students in their labs in testing. Hopefully, this will help us confirm some of the improvements included in the NDE interface.

What are folks plans to evaluate the accessibility of it for users with disabilities before releasing it?

As background as to why I ask…. In 2019, we did a sneak peek of Primo VE before the major launch.  Shortly after, a user came in to the library with her guide dog and told us it was creating a problem with her screen reader (JAWS).

If you would like to be part of a group that responds to accessibility issues for Primo NDE, please email me.  I imagine I can write a letter of recognition for those who participate and want to add something to their professional annual reports.

Hi Mark

We plan to roll it out in Spring/Summer 2026 to allow time for sufficient testing, consultation, and for the updating of teaching materials once we gain access to it in November. We generally do not like to make major interface changes between the fall and winter terms, and we also want to make sure that all of the major development work has been completed on NDE.

Cheers

With the upcoming Primo NDE (Next Discovery Experience) there are opportunities for early adoption. Do you plan to early adopt or will you wait and switch over later this fall in November 25, 2025?
