Join us on Wednesday, June 11, for “Using the RDA Toolkit,” a workshop presented by Tim Carlton! Using the RDA Toolkit Presented by Tim Carlton June 11, 2014, 9:00-3:30 Library of Congress John Adams Building Classroom LA149 In this course, participants will learn how to: • navigate and search the RDA Toolkit • personalize the Toolkit • take advantage of user-contributed content • locate help and additional resources Participants will receive temporary RDA Toolkit login information. Tim Carlton is a Senior Instructor in the Cooperative and Instructional Programs Division of the Library of Congress. Over the last 4 years, he helped plan, develop, coordinate, deliver, and monitor the comprehensive 36-hour training of over 450 LC staff for RDA, and he is currently developing related follow-up training and ‘performance support’. Registration: Due to generous benefactors, we’re able to offer this workshop at the low registration rate of only $65. PTPL SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT 2014 Potomac Technical Processing Librarians (PTPL) announces the availability of two $1,000 scholarships for future librarians interested in technical services. Students living or working in the PTPL membership region (DC, Maryland, Virginia) and who are currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited Library and/or Information Science program, including distance education programs, are invited to apply. Criteria Requirements for the Award: 1. The applicant must be a full or part-time student in an ALA-accredited Library and/or Information Science at the Master's level at the time of the award and have completed at least one three-hour credit course; 2. demonstrate an interest in library technical services through employment, course of study, or research interests. Technical services work centers on the "…acquisition, identification, cataloging, classification, and preservation of all kinds of library materials." (see: ALCTS, http://www.ala.org/alcts/about) and; 3. be employed or living in the PTPL membership region (Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia). To apply, please submit the following materials: 1. PTPL scholarship application 2. Two written references (see below for details) 3. Current resume 4. As part of Mason Libraries Technical Services Group, you'll work with talented and motivated librarians and staff who process a healthy volume of print and electronic materials. This is a forward-looking department that optimistically plans for the future of acquisitions and cataloging. We have good workflows in place for receiving and cataloging, and consult on and participate in metadata creation across the libraries. We are looking for someone who is energized by cataloging and wants to be a part of a team that envisions and enacts the future of cataloging at Mason! This is a highly collaborative position, offering the opportunity to continue and extend good relationships with a number of colleagues across the Libraries, including the Head, Resource Acquisition, the Information Analyst for Technical Services, Digital Programs and Systems Group, Collection Development & Preservation, Special Collections & Archives, and Liaison Librarians. Some details: RDMS staff is comprised of professional faculty librarians (3 FTE) and cataloging staff (8 FTE). This position manages ongoing workflows and special projects for the Unit, which encompasses receiving, and copy and original cataloging of library materials in all formats, including digital, multimedia, and special collections material. Incumbent determines best practices for cataloging and descriptive workflows; provides quality control for processed materials utilizing various metadata standards; ensures bibliographic integrity by actively using authority control; and edits and updates database records using batch process tools, such as MARCEdit. Required Qualifications: - ALA-accredited MLS or ALA-recognized foreign equivalent; - Experience with cataloging operations including original cataloging and quality control; - Significant experience with RDA, AACR2, LCC, LCSH, MARC21, OCLC Connexion; - Experience with new and evolving information access standards and metadata schemes (Dublin Core, EAD, etc.); - Demonstrated effective supervisory leadership; - Demonstrated successful organization, communication and interpersonal skills; - Strong service orientation and commitment to the profession; - Collegial, team-focused management orientation. Hello everyone, I had originally hoped to have the annual meeting in January, but will be unable to make it happen. I will work to host the annual meeting in the spring. I should have a date posted on the list-serv in January 2014. I will be asking Ex Libris to send a rep, as we had at our last annual meeting. If there are specific topics you would like addressed, please forward those to me. I imagine we will be interested in hearing how those who migrated to Alma are getting along. Also, if you would like to present on a special topic or project that you have been involved in, let me know and I will see about putting it on the program. [DCExLIBRIS] Annual Meeting for DC ExLibris

Hi everyone, Due to a health matter and other circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to plan the Annual Meeting for this fall. When I assumed leadership responsibilities for DC ExLibris, I sent a survey of the membership. The majority of responses favored Annual Meetings in the Fall and at locations easily accessible to public transportation. Since Annual Meetings are a vital part of our work with Ex Libris, I would like to begin working towards the next Annual Meeting as soon as possible. I offer January 17th, 2014 at Prince Georges Community College as the next Annual Meeting. My library was renovated in 2008 and still looks remarkably good. I can accommodate 50 people. This is the capacity of the largest meeting room in the library. I can also offer 3 breakout rooms. Each are wired and have monitors, projection devices, pc's, etc. At our last meeting at the Folger, in October of 2013, we were able to offer that at no-charge with a lunch-on-your-own. We will have to consider a fee for lunch for the meeting at Prince Georges. I will be in touch with Ex Libris and the larger Users Group to see about defraying expenses. When I have all the information for that, I will finalize the plans and begin the registration process. At the time the registration site goes live, I will be asking for presentation ideas. Since we will have 3 breakout rooms, we will be able to have multiple presentations in different categories. I hope this will meet with everyone's approval and I look forward to seeing many of you in January. Best, John D. Supervises three professional faculty (librarians) and eight support staff.
