SECOND NOTICE - APPLICATIONS DUE DATE MAY 27, 2011 Potomac Technical Processing Librarians (PTPL), a regional affiliate of the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services, is a professional organization for technical services librarians in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Each year we offer a scholarship to Library School students, details of which are in the announcement below. Please forward as appropriate. PTPL SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT 2011 Potomac Technical Processing Librarians (PTPL) announces the availability of two $1,000 scholarships for future librarians interested in technical services. Students living or working in the PTPL membership region (DC, Maryland, Virginia) and who are currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited Library and/or Information Science program, including distance education programs, are invited to apply. Criteria Requirements for the Award: 1. The applicant must be a full or part-time student in a Library and/or Information Science program at the Master’s level and have completed at least one three-hour credit course. 2. The applicant must demonstrate an interest in library technical services through employment, course of study, or research interests. Technical services is work "…dedicated to acquisition, identification, cataloging, classification, and preservation of all kinds of library materials." (see: ALCTS, http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/alcts/about/index.cfm) To apply, please submit the following materials and note that all submissions must be in MS Word to Suzanne Picken at picken(a)wrlc.org: 1. The Potomac Technical Processing Librarians announce the following workshop: XML Workshop with Matthew Gibson Friday, May 13, 2011 9 AM - 5 PM OCLC Office (11 Dupont Circle NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20036) Matthew Gibson, an experienced XML instructor and developer, is Director of Digital Programs at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities at the University of Virginia. This one-day hands-on workshop will explore XML with a specific focus on fundamentals of design, markup, and use. The workshop will take the student through building a document in XML, validating that document, and transforming that document into another format for the public user. Topics to be covered include: • XML: What is it? What's the difference between XML and HTML? And why as librarians should we care about XML? • Understanding XML validation: What it is, and why is it important? • Content transformation (using XSLT and XPath) to enable XML that we build to be read and used in a variety of formats by our potential users. Dear colleagues, The Ex Libris DC User Group Meeting will be held on December 3rd , 2010 at the Health Sciences Center Building, Montgomery College, Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus. Please see the attached agenda and map for the Health Sciences Center (HC) location (off Georgia Avenue), parking information, accommodations and directions to the College. The address for HC is 7977 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20910. Dear Colleagues, The Ex Libris DC User Group Meeting will be held on December 3, 2010 at Montgomery College, Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus. This will be a great opportunity to meet, network, and exchange ideas with your colleagues. The meeting will offer sessions on Aleph, Voyager, and SFX/MetaLib. CNI, jointly sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries and Educause, includes about 200 member organizations concerned with the use of information technology and networked information to enhance scholarship and intellectual productivity.
