Responding to Debbie’s point about using the AI Metadata Assistant to create 65X fields, I have frequently thought this would be the “killer” feature for certain categories of materials, especially ETDs. However, after extensive testing, I have found that it is not reliable for this. The choices are often incomplete (lacking appropriate subdivisions, e.g.) and more troubling, in at least one case, they were flat out wrong, giving me a supposedly valid LCSH that was actually a See reference to a different one. If your interest is in figuring out a way to more reliably guide you in assigning LCSH, you are better off turning to the LCSH Recommendation Tool (https://www.kwokleongtang.net/tools/2025_03_lcsh_browser_extension/lcsh_bro…) However, it, too, has significant flaws and should be used very carefully. Another problem with Ex Libris’s AI Metadata Editor is that it can’t tell the difference between a creator and a contributor. If a work has a creator, that should (normally) be the main entry, e.g., a 100 for a personal name. If a contributor, e.g., editor or compiler, it should never be put into a 1xx but should instead go in a 7xx. Maybe I’m feeling grumpier than usual but so far, to quote Shania Twain, that don’t impress me much. I’ve been doing a lot of original cataloging lately and after I import the bib record into Alma, I like to run the “Enhance with AI Assistant” feature. I like to have as many access points as possible, especially in the 65X fields, and find the feature useful for that. The problem is that it repeats other fields unnecessarily, e.g., I will have an author in the 100 field and the AI Assistant will create a 700 field with the exact same information. Just yesterday, I was working on a bulletin from the 1800s and AI Assistant automatically added 490/830 fields, even though this bulletin wasn’t part of a series. I like and will continue to use the feature, but I will continue to review each record for accuracy. Ex Libris & AI - technical documentation

Hi all, I've been wondering whether there are any technical documents that outline, in some depth, how AI works with Ex Libris products. I'm thinking along the lines of the documentation you see in the Developer Network. Specifically, I was hoping it might address questions such as: * What specific AI models are used for the different AI-related functionalities in Alma? Architectural diagrams outlining the flow of data would be useful. * Is there a usage threshold in the event of excessive use? * What risks are there of AI "hallucinations"? How do the models ensure the greatest possible accuracy of information? * In terms of privacy, is the data we input retained or used in any way? I've engaged a little with Ex Libris, as well as with other members of the Ex Libris user community. I don't believe anything like this currently exists, but I do think there would be value in greater transparency around how AI is being used. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has similar thoughts or insights on the matter. Best regards, Mark

Information Research - Vol. 30 No. iConf (2025) Promoting AI literacy through U.S. academic libraries: an analysis of LibGuides from ARL and Oberlin group libraries using the EDUCAUSE AI literacy framework Ko Chun Ru and Rong Tang DOI: https://doi.org/10.47989/ir30iConf47182 Abstract. As the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly advances, academic libraries are increasingly pivotal in supporting AI literacy among students and faculty. Method. Through content analysis, the present study examines 70 newly developed generative AI LibGuides from academic libraries affiliated with the association of research libraries (ARL) and the Oberlin group, using the EDUCAUSE AI literacy framework. Analysis. Through a detailed examination, the present research reorganizes and improves the EDUCAUSE AI literacy framework, proposing a more comprehensive version tailored to higher education needs. The adapted framework fills the gaps in the original model and offers a nuanced approach to AI literacy, reflecting the unique challenges faced by academic libraries. Results. The findings reveal that most LibGuides emphasize foundational AI tools and responsible use, with less focus on advanced technical competencies related to AI creation. Significant differences were observed between ARL and Oberlin Group LibGuides, with ARL offering more comprehensive coverage. To address these differences, consistent training and knowledge sharinginitiatives are recommended to ensure a common standard of AI literacy support across academic libraries. Conclusion. This study provides insights into the role of libraries in promoting generative AI literacy and identifies areas for future strategic partnerships and improvement. Communicating process of decision making around enabling AI tools to your community

Hi folks Does anyone have public facing communications you would be willing to share around how your library is making its decisions around whether or not to enable AI powered tools in library resources (like the Primo and Ebook Central Research Assistants)? In addition, on our campus, individual faculty can make the decision as to whether or not their students are allowed to use AI tools in their coursework. If you have a similar situation on your campus, what type of communication strategies have you used to help students navigate this with your library resources. For example, I wondered about adding notes in A to Z list entries if there are any AI powered features on a database. Topical Discussion Week Two Feature Development

Hello Everyone, In continuation with last week's general discussion and to open up AI discussion before ELUNA, I wanted to see if there are AI features you have seen from other products that you might like to incorporate into one of the Ex Libris products or if there is functionality that seems not quite there. There was a discussion from last week about virtual keyboard integration for non-roman alphabet languages. There is an older Suggest an Idea<https://ideas.exlibrisgroup.com/forums/308176-primo/suggestions/38682451-ad…> on this very concept. I am unsure if there is an enhancement request for the same this year. If this is a broad enough concern, then it might be something for the Primo working group to consider. Are there other AI features that you have seen in other products? Feel free to also continue last week's discussion on problems/issues. I am finding the ability of the Primo AI to identify specific articles from individual schools problematic and have sent in several corrective feedbacks for AI training purposes.
