Hello Elizabeth, We have a relatively small circ staff and are not reliant on student workers. We have individual accounts for all persons who work with Voyager. It's very easy to set up an individual account, and restrict their authority in the circulation set-up in Sys Admn. It would be a maintenance routine to delete any employee (regardless of status) when that employee is no longer in need of Voyager access. Considering how long MCC has been using Voyager, it seems a bit odd that a fundamental policy such as this would be still unresolved. Good luck! John John D. Hello All, I am faced with a bit of a challenge in that our access services supervisor has requested to have operator accounts for the students that work under her supervision. The student assistants would be responsible for working the circulation desk, including performing various tasks using the circulation module. Our IT Department has very specific guidelines governing accounts, passwords and overall software use, and I am just wondering how you and your libraries handle non full-time employees (students, volunteers, part-time, etc.) having access to specifically the circulation module. Annual meeting survey

Potomac Technical Processing Librarians (PTPL) 2012 Scholarship Announcement

PTPL SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT 2012 Potomac Technical Processing Librarians (PTPL) announces the availability of two $1,000 scholarships for future librarians interested in technical services. Students living or working in the PTPL membership region (DC, Maryland, Virginia) and who are currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited Library and/or Information Science program, including distance education programs, are invited to apply. Criteria Requirements for the Award: 1. The applicant must be a full or part-time student in Library and/or Information Science at the Master’s level and have completed at least one three-hour credit course. 2. The applicant must demonstrate an interest in library technical services through employment, course of study, or research interests. Technical services is work "dedicated to acquisition, identification, cataloging, classification, and preservation of all kinds of library materials" (see: ALCTS, http://www.ala.org/alcts/mgrps/sections) To apply, please submit the following materials and note that all submissions must be in MS Word to Mimi Games: mgames(a)wcl.american.edu. 1. Dear Colleagues, As you all know, Vani Murthi served as Chair of the DC ExLibris Users Group for 3 years and unfortunately, (for us), she has left her position at Montgomery College and can no longer serve as Chair. The Planning Committee had asked everyone to save a date in early January 2012 for the next annual meeting, but since we are chairless, the Committee is forced to postpone the January date. If anyone out in ExLibris Land is willing to serve as Chair, please let the list know and the Planning Committee can get together with you to plan any future meetings. The University of Baltimore’s Langsdale Library is seeking a Head of Technical Services and Content Management to provide leadership in areas of acquisitions, cataloging and metadata development for optimal user access to the library’s collection. Employment offer is contingent on final budgetary approval. The successful candidate should be a creative and team-oriented professional who will lead a department of one faculty and two paraprofessional staff with a vision to optimize metadata and cataloging records and to find new ways to use metadata to make the library’s collections more accessible to users. To do so, he/she should have demonstrated knowledge of current trends in cataloging, metadata and information retrieval. Responsibilities will also include monographs and serials acquisitions, ordering and invoicing for digital resources, processing and tracking fund expenditures, and vendor relations. The Head of Technical Services and Content Management will work closely and collaboratively with Public Services, Special Collections and Digital Services to ensure efficient workflow and high-quality user experience, set goals, and establish priorities. The successful candidate will provide expertise in cataloging (including MARC, RDA and other schemas); set departmental priorities and maximize fiscal and human resources for the benefit of Langsdale users; lead the department in the assessment of the collection (print and electronic) and the analysis of user data in order to align the collection with user needs. He/she will also lead in the evaluation and innovative use of technologies, including the management of the current and future integrated library system and discovery services; and lead ongoing review of departmental policies and work flows. Required Qualifications: • ALA-accredited MLS; minimum five years library cataloging and acquisitions • Minimum of three years supervisory experience with evidence of innovative leadership and demonstration of collaboration with library faculty, staff and others across the University • Experience in original cataloging and non-MARC metadata creation • Knowledge of trends in technical services and digital libraries, particularly in terms of metadata standards, with the ability to effectively communicate new developments in the field to library and non-library staff • Ability to multitask and manage detail • Demonstrated skill in project development • Strong oral and written communication and critical thinking skills • Knowledge of existing ILS systems and emerging library technologies • Enthusiasm for an innovative and changing environment • Ability to meet requirements for faculty appointment, promotion, and permanent status Preferred Qualifications: • Experience with Ex Libris’ Aleph integrated library system • Experience in an academic library setting • Experience in collection management (print and electronic) • Experience managing a materials budget To Apply: Application materials include a cover letter, current resume, and the names and contact information of three professional references.
